Biography

Tommy Gauthier is one of the most accomplished and versatile musician of the Québec folk music scene. He studied the violin at the University of Montreal. His tremendous talent and improvisational skills have already put a stamp on the band's sound and performances. Tommy's work can be heard on Matapat's latest recording "Que de peines et d'amour".

Tommy and Antoine Dufour are the core of Matapat. Founded in 1997, cosmopolitan in its spirit and its inspiration, passionate, versatile, and full-blooded, Matapat is a French Canadian folk music band based in Montréal echoing World's music traditions and its modern heritage.

Undeniably French Canadian, Matapat's music reflects influences from a diverse spectrum of musical traditions and cultures and expends the soul and spirit of folk music in new and exciting directions.

Performance Highlights

Matapat, a brilliant debut album, was nominated in 1998 for a Canadian Juno Award. This was followed by the equally strong Petit fou in 2001 that also garnered a Canadian Juno award nomination.
